Vale Derek Humphrey

Westgate Concert Band is deeply saddened by the passing of Derrick (Derek) Humphrey OAM on September 25, 2019. Forty years ago, Derek co-founded Westgate Concert Band with Roy Hamilton to provide opportunities for young musicians in Melbourne’s West, but he achieved so much more. He gave the gift of community music to countless individuals who continue his legacy today, and was a dear friend to many. As passionate high school music teachers, he and Roy passed on thier love and enthusiasm for music to thier students, with many of those they recruited becoming long-standing members of the band. Although Derek officially retired from conducting Westgate in 1994, he maintained his close association, appearing as guest conductor, providing arrangements, and welcoming the band to Queenscliff and Ocean Grove for annual concerts and BBQs. His contributions to music extended across communities and in 2012 he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to music. It was an honour for Westgate Concert Band to have been led by such an inspiration, supportive and generous maestro, who will be greatly missed. Our most heartfelt condolences go to the Humphrey family.
