Westgate Concert Band is a symphonic wind ensemble, comprising woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. It was formed in 1979 by Derek Humphrey and Roy Hamilton to extend young musicians in Melbourne's west by providing opportunities to perform music at an advanced level. Derek retired from musical direction of the band in 1994. Roy is now assisted in this task by Andrew Derrett and Daniel Modica.

As a community band, Westgate continues to offer its members the opportunity to perform challenging music in a range of styles. The band gives 3-4 major concerts a year and takes part in an annual Festival of Bands. It also "plays out" at various community functions and is the resident band at Scienceworks Museum in Spotswood.

Participation in Westgate Concert Band is celebrated each year at our annual presentation night. Five, ten, fifteen and twenty year awards are made to deserving recipients. Twenty five years of service qualifies for Life Membership of the band.

The Ian Stewart Memorial Award (in memory of the father of one of our longest serving members) is awarded each year to a playing member of the band for encouragement or outstanding contribution.

The Bob and Marion Heard Award (recognizing the magnificent and tireless on-going contribution of our long time Secretary, Marion and her husband, Bob) is awarded each year to a non- playing member or friend of the band for outstanding contribution.

Westgate Concert Band inc. has an active committee, a regular newsletter, a large library of scores, and a proud tradition of music making!
